The German Institute for the History of Medicine, affiliated with the University of Würzburg in Bavaria, announced on Monday the selection of the fennel plant as the medicinal plant of 2009. In some Arab countries, this plant is known as fennel or sparrow, and its scientific name is (Foeniculum vulgare).
The researchers of the institute who specialize in studying the history of medicinal herbs confirmed that this plant has been known since ancient times in the field of herbal medicine. The ancient Egyptian and Chinese civilizations knew its importance, as it was included in their menu as a type of vegetable and they also used it as a medicinal herb. Monks also used it since 840 AD in medicine, as it was added to goat’s milk and drank to relieve colic and sore throat, and this method is still used now.
